NAYIKA CATALOGUE

Art of Worldly Wisdom

by Balthasar Gracian

This is the second book of the Nayika Wisdom of the World series. Containing 300 maxims of wisdom from a 17th century Jesuit monk, it provides advice on human nature and how to steer yourself in a politically charged atmosphere. Useful for managers and aspiring leaders alike.

Excerpt: below is a sample maxim from the book.

Original views are signs of superior ability. We do not think much of a man who never contradicts us: that is no sign he loves us, but rather that he loves himself. Do not be deceived by flattery, as you will have to pay for it; rather condemn it. Besides, you may take credit for being censured by some, especially if they are those of whom the good speak ill. On the contrary, it should disturb us if our affairs please every one, for that is a sign that they are of little worth. Perfection is for the few.

The first chapter contains Franklin's essay titled "The Way to Wealth". This was condensed from his Almanac by Franklin himself.

The second chapter forms a collection of quotes and sayings that Franklin interspersed throughout his Poor Richard's Almanac; these nuggets of wisdom have been arranged in alphabetical order.

The third chapter of the book contains various other advice that Franklin gave for a wealthy future.

All the work in the book is reproduced from Franklin's original writings verbatim save for some minor editing to make his late Middle English more comprehensible to the modern reader.

Who is this book for? Anyone interested in bettering themselves. Significantly, Franklin's writings, especially those pertaining to business (such as the 'Way to Wealth' essay), may be considered as the earliest form of business advice. So the book is, in a sense, a reproduction of one of the earliest business books written in English.

Text from the back cover of the book:

Most of us want to be wealthy -- whether we measure wealth in terms of happiness, health, relationships or money. Who better than Franklin to guide us on our journey: he was successful as a statesman, an inventor, a businessman and a family man. The
advice he gives is timeless and readily adaptable to our daily lives and habits. It is said that there is more pleasure in the journey than in reaching its goal; may your way to wealth be a happy one!
